It can sometimes be difficult to transition from the lazy, unstructured days of summer to the more rigorous schedule of school, but Sarah Allen, PhD, a neuropsychologist at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, says that there are a number of things parents can do to help their children 鈥渨arm up鈥 their brains in preparation to go back to school, including: creating a mental path for learning new information; screening for negative thinking or anxiety; and even beautifying the child鈥檚 workspace.

Dr. Allen can also discuss how a child鈥檚 brain can grow over the summer, and how to guide that growth during the academic year.
